Member Update 8 August 2024 | Term 3, Week 4
Acknowledgement of Country
The VACPSP acknowledges the Traditional Custodians of the many lands that encompass our Catholic primary schools across Victoria – Dioceses of Ballarat, Sale, Sandhurst and the Archdiocese of Melbourne. The VACPSP recognises the Traditional Custodians' culture and the continuing spiritual connection to land, sea and waters.
The VACPSP pays our respect to their Elders past, present and emerging and extend that respect to all Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples who live, work, teach and learn within Catholic education in Victoria.
We commit to working together to create culturally safe schools for all Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students to learn and thrive. We commit to working together for reconciliation, justice and treaty.
From the President
Midway through term three is a very busy time in primary school settings. Recently at our Principal Council Meeting leaders from across Victoria shared exciting things happening in their communities this term from Olympic celebrations to 100 days of school for prep students! This meeting took place in Sale as the VACPSP endeavours to attend each diocese to host the Principal Council. As well as the highlights of the year, you know too well that the wheels of teaching are constantly turning including consolidating progress, checking results, adjusting to student-specific needs and preparing for the next year! All these behind-the-scenes elements demand focus, clear thinking and emotional energy. Sometimes these tasks lead us to lose focus on our purpose and the impact good teachers and school leaders really make.
So, if you are looking for some mid-term boost for yourself and your staff, I encourage you to take a look at the Spanish film, Radical. This film, written and directed by Christopher Zalla, resonated with me as it highlighted the impact of the teacher. The film is based on the true story of Sergio Juárez Correa, a Mexican teacher who transformed a neglected school with his unconventional teaching methods. The film focuses on the lives of three students, including Paloma Noyola Bueno, whose hidden potential was unlocked by Sergio's teaching. The film is written for adults and does connect with some difficult themes, but ultimately is a story that inspires us to make a difference in the world, recognise the joy of teaching, appreciate the impact we have for young people and work toward creating a world of hope, resilience and inspiration for our students.

Message from the CEO - Victorian Registration & Qualifications Authority
Welcome to Term 3 and my first eNews as CEO of the VRQA. I feel privileged to have the opportunity to lead the VRQA and continue the important work of protecting children and young people from harm and ensuring quality learning outcomes for students, apprentices, and trainees.
This edition of eNews contains information that is relevant to all duty holders, reflecting the diversity and breadth of our work.
We are continuing to implement a range of reforms and initiatives to protect apprentices and trainees from harm. In March and April, we revoked the approval of 5 employers. This included immediately banning a building company after WorkSafe reported that an apprentice had fallen from a height. You can visit us at the Melbourne Career Expo from Friday 26 to Sunday 28 July to find out more about how we support apprentices and trainees.
Changes to the Reportable Conduct Scheme make sure allegations of harm and abuse by workers, regardless of their type of employment, are reported and investigated to better safeguard children in Victoria. Schools, school boarding premises and other education provider must comply with the Reportable Conduct Scheme.
When you register a child for home schooling it means you have primary responsibility for their education. Children cannot attend unregistered schools. The information in this edition provides clarification on the forms home schooling can take.
The VRQA Board has approved changes to our Guidelines for VET Providers. These changes ensure consistency with national standards for VRQA-registered training organisations (RTOs). There will be a transition period and we will provide guidance to RTOs about how to comply.
This month, we commence our 2024 client and stakeholder research. Your feedback and insights help improve our understanding of the regulatory issues impacting your sector and improve our services. We appreciate your participation.
I look forward to meeting with duty holders and stakeholders in the coming months.
